Kyle Larson delivered one of the most remarkable days in motorsports history at the 65th Knoxville Nationals, presented by Casey's, on Saturday night. After winning Thursday's Toyota Qualifying Night to claim the pole for the Championship Feature, Larson's participation looked doubtful — his Hendrick Motorsports NASCAR Cup Series commitments meant he was set to race at Richmond Raceway the same night, with a teammate ready to start and park his sprint car in his place.
Rain changed everything. A weather delay at Knoxville gave Larson's Cup crew chief, Cliff Daniels, enough of a window to route him from Richmond straight to Iowa after finishing sixth. Fans tracked his flight in real time, and he arrived at Knoxville Raceway with a police escort just as the C-main was underway.
Once in the car, Larson was untouchable. Starting and leading all 50 laps, he held off challenges from Sheldon Haudenschild and Kasey Kahne to capture his fourth Knoxville Nationals title and the accompanying $200,000 prize. The win ties him with Kenny Weld and Danny Lasoski for fourth all-time, pushes his overall Knoxville win total to 16, and gives him 40 career World of Outlaws checkered flags — making him only the 22nd driver ever to hit that number. It also capped a perfect week for Larson and car owner Paul Silva, who swept four races in six days.
Haudenschild finished a career-best second, extending his streak to seven straight top-10 Nationals finishes. Kasey Kahne rounded out the podium in third, his own strongest result in the event, saying he stayed within striking distance of Larson for much of the race and felt confident in his car's pace throughout. James McFadden and Logan Schuchart completed the top five.
